Norman Watchtower is typical of the type of local defensive
structures the Normans built throughout their lands in France and England
during the 11th Century. Though not as large and powerful as a full-fledged
castle, these small towers were capable of supporting a modest garrison
for the purpose of dealing with local bandits or even small groups of
seafaring raiders from Scandinavia or Frisia. They were also the center
of law and order among the local peasantry.
